Plus the BFG edition runs MUCH faster than the modded version.

That said, the BFG does have some nice additions I wish could be incorporated into the original version:

The lighting, animations, sounds, and textures on the modded version are vastly superior to the BFG edition. I'm using the Absolute HD mod, which combines all of the top mods together in one convenient package. I've started a new game in each one, play through an entire section, switch to the other one and then play through it again. Especially when all of the mods are free and easy to install. I know the textures have been upgraded over the original (unmodded) Doom 3 but other than that I see no point. Obviously the lighting engine was simplified on the BFG Edition so it could run on consoles, thus why it looks and performs so different, but it baffles me why they would release it back on PC. Meanwhile the modded version runs in the 40-50fps range at 1080p and that's with certain things turned off, like AA and soft shadows. I'm running the BFG Edition at 3840x1620 (downsampled) with AA cranked all the way up and it's still a buttery 60fps. + native widescreen support (I have a 21:9 aspect ratio monitor) I just bought the BFG Edition on sale for $4 so I could compare it against the original Doom 3, fully modded.
